My Not-So-Floppy Hats have a millinery brim ‘wire’ sewn into the edge to stop the brim being blown into your face. They also sport an adjustable neck cord for safety on windy days and practicality if you just want to take it off for a bit.
The main fabric is cotton from a Swiss maker called Ventile. This tightly-woven material has a durable water-repellent coating and in heavier weights is so tough its used for the uniforms of firefighters. In this case the rest of the fabric was used to make a man’s made-to-measure raincoat.
The hat lining is made of cotton shirting surplus from renowned European makers Albini or Alumo. A cool hand wash is all that’s needed to keep your new hat looking tiptop.
Take care not to overly bend the brim wire, in use or when cleaning or storing it, as its made of plastic (despite its name), and may snap.
